All I want for Christmas is nice clean teeth. Well, maybe that’s not all I want for Christmas but it’s a great start. If you’re looking for a new toothbrush or a stocking filler for kids or partners, toothbrushes can be practical and welcome presents. We’ve listed the Best ideas for Christmas Gifts below to save you time this year – click here.
Unfortunately, Christmas is the worst time of year for teeth. Halloween is pretty damaging, but the Christmas season and its focus on ‘eating, drinking and being merry’ means that teeth are coated with sugar with the opening of advent calendars first thing in the morning on 1st December until at least New Year with finishing up all those selection boxes & naughty treats.
Christmas Catastrophes for Teeth
Christmas sweeties, chocolate coins, sugary drinks, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, marzipan, pannettone, stollen or chocolate yule log – our poor teeth don’t stand a chance. Even if you’re good at avoiding the obvious dental disasters, a glass of Christmas liqueur can be horrifically sugar-filled: Cointreau, and Disaronno Amaretto are two of the worst culprits for hidden sugar, but Baileys is the worst alcoholic liqueur – with nearly 5 teaspoons of sugar in 100ml – Ouch!
How to Help your Teeth Cope with Christmas
Teeth deserve a little helping hand in fighting the battle if we don’t all want to end up missing our pearly whites. So best thing to do is to try and limit eating your sugary foods and drinks to one part of the day; certainly avoid ‘all-day grazing’ which is the worst possible thing we can do for plaque and acid. If you have to eat that advent calendar chocolate before breakfast and that little Disaronno after lunch, obviously try and clean your teeth afterwards if you can. Mouthwash is great, and a good floss in the evening will certainly help banish the evils of sugar at the end of the day.
Buying kids a little ‘toothbrush’ gift for Christmas can be a gentle way of reminding them how important a good dental hygiene regime is. Read on for our suggestions!
